Is A Rental Right For Me?
|
Do you really need a rental car? This is an important question when heading on vacation. If you are the type who prefers a multi-location holiday, then having a car will give you more flexibility. If your accommodation is not close to the airport, it may be a bonus to have the car for the transfer. If you are staying a more rural location it may be useful to have your own transportation, period. There are several questions you need to ask yourself. Are you a fairly confident driver? Or are you going to be a nervous wreck? Will you be worrying about every single day's drive? It is important to keep in mind the different customs in different areas. In Mexico City, many tour guides joke that Mexico is truly free because red lights are just suggestions. If you are in Europe, especially in Italy, you will probably be honked at quite a bit. Is this something that is easy to shrug off, or will it get to you? How about England? Can you drive on the "other side" of the road without too much difficulty, or is a minor change like that going to drive you nuts? It is imperative to make sure that you have wide-ranging insurance coverage. Many rental companies so - called inclusive cover can often be patchy, at best. Check out your credit cards. Many credit cards will automatically give you full coverage on your rental car as long as you use that card to rent. Some regular auto insurance companies automatically cover you from rentals, or have an additional package for nominal charge that can be used to cover car rentals at far cheaper, and more reliable, rate and account than actual insurance offered by the car rental places themselves. You must understand exactly where you want to go and what you want to do. If most of your vacation is going to be backpacking a mountain, or staying in an all inclusive resort, then renting a car may not make much sense. In those situations you either won't be traveling a lot, or you will probably be much happier using the public transportation system. Either option is excellent, though if you are a confident driver, and a mover who likes to wander off the beaten path, then a car rental might be exactly what you need for your own personal odyssey, or family vacation. |
